info
Founded in 2003 by Helmut Newton, the Helmut Newton Foundation has evolved significantly over the past 23 years. What began as a Berlin-based foundation has grown into an internationally active institution, presenting touring exhibitions worldwide and establishing long-term collaborations with internationally renowned artists, collections and brands. Whether in museums, photography festivals or at the intersection of photography, fashion and lifestyle, the impact of Helmut Newton’s work remains as powerful and relevant as ever, more than two decades after his death.
This development is reflected in the Foundation’s new brand identity. The Helmut Newton Foundation becomes the Newton Foundation. The name change acknowledges the broader scope of the institution: alongside Helmut Newton’s work, the Foundation also preserves and presents the photographic legacy of his wife June Newton, better known by her artistic pseudonym, Alice Springs. The use of Helmut Newton’s first name has long implied that the Foundation was dedicated exclusively to his work. By removing the first name from the brand, the emphasis shifts deliberately from the individual to the institution.
The new corporate identity places the Foundation itself at the centre while allowing each exhibition considerable visual independence. The recurring and flexible use of the new wordmark together with the address line forms the framework of the design system. Within this graphic structure, exhibitions and collaborations with other artists can develop their own distinct visual language while remaining part of a coherent overall identity.
The corporate identity extends across every aspect of the Foundation, from the façade and wayfinding system to its printed and digital communications, as well as exhibition graphics and object labels. The result is a consistent and contemporary visual identity that reflects the Foundation’s international presence while providing the flexibility to accommodate the diversity of its programme.
