info
For the C/O Berlin Talent Award, the artist's book (Inter)Faces of Predictions by Sheung Yiu was developed alongside the exhibition's visual identity, including posters, invitations and additional communication materials.
In (Inter)Faces of Predictions, Sheung Yiu explores how faces have been used across different cultural and technological contexts to interpret character traits and predict the future. The project brings together traditional East Asian practices of face reading, Western physiognomic theories and contemporary facial recognition technologies. By placing these systems in dialogue, it reveals the striking parallels between historical belief systems and today's algorithmic methods, exposing the biases and stereotypical assumptions embedded in both.
The design of the artist's book translates this conceptual dialogue into a physical reading experience. Conceived as a tête-bêche publication, the book can be read from either direction, in English and German. Two equally weighted points of entry reflect the project's dual structure, allowing readers to engage directly with its contrasting perspectives.
Since 2006, the C/O Berlin Talent Award has been an integral part of C/O Berlin's programme, recognising one emerging artist and one emerging theorist or writer each year. Every award is accompanied by an artist's publication and a distinctive visual identity developed across a range of print and communication materials.
