Between Role and Reality
The show ends. The person remains. Sven Marquardt photographs the Friedrichstadt-Palast ensemble immediately after they leave the stage – at the moment when performance and personality begin to merge. His gaze is raw, direct and unvarnished. Tension, exhaustion, pride and disappointment coexist within the same image. Less than six months later, the pandemic shifts the meaning of the series. The stage disappears. The portraits take over. The foyer of the Friedrichstadt-Palast becomes an exhibition space. Large-scale photographs printed on tarpaulin meet an architecture built from scaffolding. Raw materials for raw images. The focus is not on the perfect show, but on the people behind it. A city-wide campaign carries this shift in perspective into the public realm, deliberately breaking with the venue’s familiar visual language. Exhibition and communication follow the same idea: When the performance recedes, something personal comes into view. The project film was created in collaboration with MYP Media.
